Review of 2019

Halford Hewitt
On Friday 12th April the Halford Hewitt team had one of their best results, beating Epsom 3 – 2. Sadly, in the afternoon, we ourselves were then beaten by Rugby 4 – 1. This was somewhat disappointing, as we generally felt the Epsom match should have been the tougher of the two encounters.
The team was once again captained by Jamie Gallacher, with Nick Coombs, Adam Williams, Jeremy Silver, Jonny Rafferty, Rob Carrick, Callum MacKay, Matthew McCleery, Jack Banton & Tom Watson. On paper this was possibly the strongest team Bradfield have yet fielded.

Grafton Morrish
We were able to put out a strong team for this competition, but sadly were unable to qualify for the finals, as there were some exceptional performances from other teams in our group. The team was captained by Jonny Rafferty.

Mellin (over 55), Burles (over 65) & Millard (over 75)
In the Mellin we managed a comfortable win in the first round against Mill Hill, then succumbed in a tight match to Oundle in the second round. The side was captained by Mike Jones, with David Tod, Jeremy Cooke, John Cox, Ian Wood-Smith & Roger Bathurst.
The Burles team was again captained by Andrew Wells, sadly they suffered the same fate as the Mellin team, beating Mill Hill, then losing to Oundle.
In the Millard we put in 2 teams, the A team of Hugh Dolton & John Allday, qualified for the semi-finals, beat Shrewsbury, but then lost to a strong Aldenham pair in the final.

Spring Meeting at Worplesdon
The morning round competes for the Blunt Salver, won by David Tod with 38 stableford points, & Nigel Trollope runner up, followed by Tim Rhodes.
This year for the afternoon round, the Wells Cups were at stake. This is a round of foursomes, which was won by Jonathan Bathurst & Michael Silcock on count back.
We had 19 attendees at the meeting, which is good, but we would like to welcome a few more.

Summer Meeting at Bradfield
There were several new members of the society at this event with the Cooper Tankard at stake. The event was won by Nick Duncan, who was attending his first OBGS event. The college course is in excellent condition & the experience has now been enhanced by the impressive new clubhouse.

The Ruperti Salver at Royal Wimbledon
This is generally the best attended event in the OBGS calendar, with this year being no exception. Simon Osborn once again both hosted & organized the event. The Salver was won by Dominic Flint on countback with 37 stableford points from Simon Osborn, & Andrew Eve close behind.

The Autumn Meeting at Huntercombe
This was the first year of a newly formatted meeting, with a match against the Old Canfordian GS on Friday afternoon, followed by 2 stableford rounds on Saturday. The Saturday morning round saw Ian Wood-Smith take the Thurston Cup for the best scratch round, & Paul Constantinidi compile a very impressive 39 points to win the Goddard Cup, with Chris Mitchell in second place. The afternoon rounds were won by Andrew Eve taking the Hoare Trophy & Tim Rhodes defending the Mills Horn.

Other events
There are a few other events worth a mention, – we have an annual match against the Old Shirburnian GS at Sunningdale, with a side compiled of both the college golf team & society members. A match against Huntercombe GC, with a good number of OBs representing the Huntercombe team, an excellent day at West Sussex, which will be marking a 40th anniversary next year, plus the annual visit to Royal St. George’s, arguably the finest course in England. The final event of the year is the society AGM & dinner at the Royal Thames Yacht Club, always a convivial affair.

Please feel free to email me with any questions you might have about the society, as you will see from the above, we organize a wide variety of golf, for golfers of any ability.
