Music at Mount Street

Charlie Kirby (G 07-12) transforms an old boiler room into state of the art Music Studios

Charlie took Music Technology A level at Bradfield College, which led to a place at Falmouth University on the BA Popular Music course. After three years enjoying the delights of Cornwall, studying in depth popular music culture and influences, alongside honing his music tech skills, the opportunity arose for him to move to Nottingham where he decided to set up his own studio. The space was a 1960’s disused boiler room, housing industrial boilers servicing the original office block above, which has now been transformed over an 18-month period into a fully dedicated, hybrid recording studio. Mount Street Studios officially opened in May 2018. The studio offers recording, production, mixing, mastering and tutorial services.

A year later, and the studio has established itself as a dynamic start-up in the East Midlands, having just been announced as Miloco Studio’s first representation in the region. Miloco Studio have a directory of some of the best studios in the world on their books. Recent highlights have included working with artists Westlife and Liam Bailey, and doing voice-over work for Nike.  The studio is embedded in the Nottingham music scene; as well as working with companies and artists nationally, it has also just done its first BBC Introducing session live, and is working closely with the BBC to continue this working relationship.

Charlie does a lot of production out of the studio, and has now hired 2 audio engineers to help take some of the strain when it comes to those long and late sessions. He has set up a publishing company and hopes to focus his attention on that full time soon, as well as going down the record label route, with the aim of pushing the local music talent to the next step.
