Letter from the Headmaster

Dated 19 September 1940 during the Battle of Britain

During research into the Old Bradfieldians who served during the Battle of Britain, a letter was uncovered in the College Archive from the Headmaster Mr J. D. Hills. It was sent to parents at the start of the Michaelmas term over 80 years ago and is dated 19 September 1940.

The letter explains what the College were doing to protect the boys against attack from the air, be it from 'a chance bomb or in the event of a large attack on this part of England'. He goes on to explain about how the 'house stations' or cellars under College, Hillside and other basement areas had been cleared and strengthened and the other areas readied for use around the site.

The letter shows the matter of fact way that everyone at the time prepared to the best of their ability to cope with the unexpected and thankfully the College survived the period unscathed from any direct action or damage.
