Morrison’s Academy Marks Robert Burns’ Legacy with Special Celebrations

Over the past few weeks, Primary School pupils at Morrison’s Academy have embraced the new year by celebrating the life and work of Robert Burns, Scotland’s most celebrated Bard.

Over the past few weeks, Primary School pupils at Morrison’s Academy have embraced the new year by celebrating the life and work of Robert Burns, Scotland’s most celebrated Bard.

The leading independent day school in Crieff launched its annual Burns celebrations on Thursday 23rd January with a Primary Scots Recitation, featuring a fantastic selection of both contemporary and traditional poems by renowned Scottish poets. Judged by Teresa Moran, it offered an incredible showcase of Scottish culture, language and talent.

Pupils were also invited to join in the fun at the Scots Singing Competition a week later on Friday 31st January, with the class finalists taking to the stage to share a selection of Scottish songs. From traditional lullabies to dancing tales and ballads – the bar was set high at this solo competition which was judged by local singing teacher, Michelle Sheridan Grant..

Transitional pupils hosted their annual Burns Breakfast for their peers at Academy Hall on Friday 7th February, after it had been postponed due to the storms over the Burns weekend. This event featured Scots poetry, traditional Scottish dance, the iconic address to the haggis, toasts to the lads and lassies, music recitals, and of course, a delicious breakfast.

Morven Bulloch, Head of Primary at Morrison’s Academy said, “Our Primary school has been buzzing with activity throughout January, filled with a wonderful blend of singing, dancing, recitals, and piping. Pupils have put in a great deal of effort leading up to their performances, and I commend them all for their enthusiasm and willingness to take part. It was fantastic to be able to share our special Burns Breakfast with parents and friends of the school, giving them a chance to gain insight into the valuable learning experiences that Burns offers our pupils.”

Phil Kennedy, Director of Music added: “The Burns celebrations provide the perfect opportunity for the school to come together through music, and I’m delighted by the enthusiasm shown every year by our pupils. Stepping onto a stage in front of an audience is never an easy task, yet each and every one of them should feel incredibly proud of their achievements. I’d like to extend my thanks to our guest judges, who faced a challenging task in selecting this year’s winners, given the exceptionally high standard of performances.”
