Morrison's Club News |
With the best Higher results in Perthshire in 2024, there is a clear pathway to academic success at Morrison’s Academy.
Supporting pupils in making the right subject choices for exam years is crucial, as these decisions can have a lasting impact on their academic trajectory, future career options, and overall well-being.
Follow these tips below to help your child make the right subject choice:
Reflect upon strengths, interests and long-term goals: a key factor in a successful education is a pupil’s interest in a subject.
Using the vast array of resources available, research and understand the requirements for future career paths. Whether keeping options open or focusing upon a particular area of interest, bear in mind subject combinations – some may be more beneficial than others depending upon future plans.
It is often worth researching curriculum guides and consulting with teachers, parents and older pupils.
Take into consideration the type of workload of chosen subjects – for example Sciences with lab work versus those which may require a more creative output such as Art or Music. Speak to subject teachers who will be able to provide a clearer understanding of the commitment required.
Do what’s right for you; everybody is different and will have different strengths. Choose subjects that suit you, not what your friends are choosing or what you consider to be “most prestigious”. Equally, don’t base your academic choice solely on expectations – this could cause disengagement and stress.
Finally, not all career paths are determined by specific subject choices; maintain a flexible mindset and keep it broad. Keep your options and remember it is always possible to change direction later on.
At Morrison’s Academy, pupils are not restricted by a subject column structure, allowing them greater personalisation and choice as well as the opportunity to select subjects that are likely to offer them the greatest possibility of success. All Morrison’s Academy pupils are supported in the decision making process in S2, S4 and S5 through lessons in our Learning for Life programme focussed on subject choice and careers.
At Morrison’s Academy, every pupil will have the opportunity to discuss their subject options with either their form tutor, Head of House or a member of the Senior Leadership Team.
Pupils who do not currently attend Morrison’s Academy are warmly invited to our S2 Subject Information Evening on Thursday 23 January 2025 at 7.00pm where our Assistant Rector Academic and Heads of Department will be on hand to provide advice on the guidance and support available at this important time.
