David Johnson (C 40-44) sadly passed away on 21st January 2020, aged 93. David was brother to Basil Johnson, former OB and Housemaster of Hillside (1958 - 74).
David Johnson, Army House, 1940 – 1944, enlisted in the Navy directly after leaving Bradfield, serving in the Far East returning in 1947 to join the family firm, clothing manufacturers, Johnson & Sons Ltd., based in Great Yarmouth. He married Gillian Dyas in 1963, and they had three children.
Moving to Halesworth, after his marriage, he became active in the community becoming Treasurer of the local Conservative Party for many years and sitting on the Parish Council of St Peter’s Church, Holton, for forty years. He was their key-holder, regularly opening and locking up the church until his 90th year.
David’s love of sport fostered at Bradfield, remained with him all his life, playing tennis for the county of Norfolk when he was young, and playing golf every week as a Member of the Aldeburgh Golf Club until his illness shortly before his death. One particular story he enjoyed telling was how playing in goal for the Bradfield football team against an old Bradfieldian team, he found himself at the opposite end of the pitch from his brother Basil Johnson (C 33-38), who was playing in goal for the opposition.
That he was much loved in the area was underlined by the large congregation assembled for his funeral service in St. Peter’s.
